Empowering Marumba: Milling and Hulling Machine for the Community

In February 2022, a donation of £1,700 was made to fund the purchase of a community maize milling machine and hulling machine for the village of Marumba. This initiative is part of a broader project launched in 2022 to provide dehulling and milling machinery along with the necessary infrastructure to support its operation.

Addressing a Pressing Community Need

For years, the villagers of Marumba relied on an old milling machine that frequently broke down, forcing them to travel 7km to the nearest village for essential grinding and hulling services. The community identified the need for a reliable, locally managed solution to alleviate these challenges.

A Lifeline for Over 9,000 People

The new diesel-powered maize milling and hulling machine now serves not only the 1,900 residents of Marumba but also the 8,000 people from surrounding villages. Managed by the Marumba Primary School Committee, in collaboration with the Village Council, this initiative ensures that the benefits are felt across the community.

Key Features and Benefits of the Project

  1. Modern Machinery
The new milling and hulling machine provides a reliable service for villagers, significantly reducing travel time and effort.
  2. Community-Driven Management
The machine is overseen by the Village Council and operated by two individuals elected by the community. This ensures accountability and sustainability.
  3. Support for Education
Proceeds from the machine’s operation are directed to the Primary School Self-Reliance Fund, supporting essential items such as:
    • Photocopying paper and ink
    • The student food fund
  4. Economic and Time Savings
By having a local milling machine, villagers save time and resources, allowing them to focus on farming and other livelihood activities.

A Step Toward Self-Reliance

This project highlights the power of community-driven initiatives in fostering self-reliance and sustainability. By meeting a critical need, the milling machine has become a valuable resource that benefits the village's economy, education, and overall wellbeing.
