In August 2024, £8,000 was donated towards a water project at Ndwika School in partnership with the Tanzania Development Trust (TDT). This initiative covered the drilling operation costs for a borehole, addressing a critical need for clean and accessible water at the historic school.

A Historic School’s New Chapter

Ndwika School, established as an Anglican church school in 1911, transitioned to government control in the 1970s. Recently, the school expanded its capacity by welcoming 300 additional girls, bringing the total number of boarders to 900 students. While this growth signifies progress, it also placed immense pressure on the school’s limited water resources.

To meet these needs, the school took responsibility for essential infrastructure, including:

  • Surveying the land
  • Installing a water storage tank and pipes
  • Building platforms to support the system

The donation funded the borehole drilling, providing the school with a sustainable source of clean water.

Celebrating Project Completion

On a cold, wet morning in January 2025, we received uplifting news—the project had been successfully completed! The school shared these heartfelt words:

“We also extend our sincere gratitude to Africa Palms and TDT for responding to our
call for help and reaching out to us hastily. We hope that they will continue touching
lives and changing stories of many other Tanzanians the way they did to us.”

These words serve as a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact that clean water can have on communities.

In November 2024, £2,801.89 was donated via the Tanzania Development Trust to fund a vital project for the Mdughuyu Community Dispensary—a critical healthcare facility that serves over 3,224 residents in Mdughuyu Village, Tanzania.

The Challenge: A Dispensary Without Water

The Mdughuyu Dispensary has long been a lifeline for the community, but its ability to fully operate has been hindered by the absence of a reliable water supply. While a borehole was successfully drilled within the village, its location—over 4 kilometers away from the dispensary—has created a significant barrier to access.

The Solution: Bridging the Gap

This project will address the issue by connecting the borehole to the dispensary through essential infrastructure, including:

  1. Water Supply Pipes and Components
Installation of pipes, connectors, and elbows to enable the flow of water from the borehole to the dispensary.
  2. 10,000-Liter Water Storage Tank
A large-capacity tank will be installed to store sufficient water for the dispensary's daily needs, ensuring a steady and reliable supply.
  3. 600-Watt Solar Panel for Pumping
To power the water supply system efficiently and sustainably, a 600-watt solar panel will be installed.
  4. Protective Housing for the Water System
Construction of a housing structure to safeguard the water tank and the distribution point, ensuring long-term durability.

Transforming Healthcare Access

By providing clean water, this project will enable the dispensary to offer consistent healthcare services and improve hygiene standards for the community. Reliable water access will also:

  • Enhance Patient Care: Ensure better sanitation for medical procedures.
  • Support Public Health: Reduce waterborne diseases in the region.
  • Empower the Community: Promote a healthier and more resilient village.

In November 2024, £8,900 was donated to the Chikunja Water Project—a transformative initiative aimed at improving access to clean water and basic sanitation for the Napata village in the Masasi region.

Addressing Critical Challenges in Napata

The Masasi region faces significant challenges due to a lack of clean water. This shortage has led to widespread waterborne illnesses that disproportionately affect women, girls, and the elderly. The Chikunja Water Project is tackling this crisis by bringing clean, safe water to the village and improving sanitation infrastructure.

Project Highlights

  1. Clean Water Through a Borehole
A hydrological survey has approved the installation of a borehole, which will provide a sustainable and safe water supply to Napata village. This will reduce the need for community members to collect water from contaminated sources, directly improving health and wellbeing.
  2. Improved Sanitation for Schools
The project includes the construction of suitable toilets and sanitation facilities at the village school. This is particularly vital for female students, as it provides much-needed facilities that accommodate their needs during menstruation, helping to improve school attendance and participation.
  3. Environmental Gardening Club Support
Access to clean water will also benefit the school’s environmental gardening club, which focuses on preserving local flowers and trees. This initiative encourages students to learn about environmental conservation while beautifying their community.
  4. Education on Water Management
A key component of the project is an education program focused on water management, proper usage, and sustainability. This ensures that the community can maintain the water supply and benefit from long-term improvements.

Reducing Health Risks and Building Resilience

By providing clean water and better sanitation, the Chikunja Water Project is expected to reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea and typhoid. This will also ease the burden on local health facilities, allowing them to focus on other pressing healthcare needs.

We’re excited to announce that £6,880 has been donated towards the “Make It Green” project, an initiative spearheaded by the African Palms Association to combat the devastating effects of climate change in Tanzania. This project focuses on reforestation in the Masasi region, which has been significantly impacted by deforestation over the past 40 years.

The Climate Crisis in Tanzania

The climate in Tanzania is changing rapidly due to the effects of global climate change and decades of deforestation. These challenges have left local communities struggling with unpredictable weather patterns and diminishing resources.

To address these issues, the “Make It Green” project aims to restore the region’s natural environment by planting trees and empowering the community to take meaningful action.

A Simple Yet Powerful Solution: Planting Trees

Between 2025 and 2030, the “Make It Green” initiative, led by the diocese, will oversee the planting of:

  • 5000 Pine Caribbean trees
  • 2500 Teak trees
  • 2500 Caritas trees
  • 100 Banana trees
  • 500 Pawpaw trees
  • 1000 Dragon fruit trees

This reforestation effort will not only improve the local environment but also provide long-term benefits such as increased biodiversity, better soil quality, and additional sources of food and income for the community.

Educating the Next Generation

A vital aspect of the project is its focus on education and engagement. Students involved in planting these trees are learning about the importance of environmental conservation and how their efforts can combat the climate crisis. As seen in the accompanying photo, the students are eager and ready to contribute to this impactful mission.

The project is part of a broader initiative to raise awareness about climate change, emphasize the urgency of action, and foster a culture of sustainability locally and globally.

At African Palms, we are proud to announce a donation of £16,620 towards the Mpeta Water and Solar Project—an initiative designed to bring sustainable solutions to Mpeta Secondary School, located in one of the villages where our cherished Palm Crosses are made.

The Challenges at Mpeta Secondary School

Currently, the students at Mpeta Secondary School face significant challenges due to water shortages and an unreliable power supply. Here’s what they’re up against:

  • Insufficient Water Supply: Students are forced to spend valuable time fetching water that is often contaminated, exposing them to waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Power Instability: Frequent power cuts from the national grid leave students in darkness, making it difficult to study and prepare for exams. Many rely on mobile lamps, which are not always available and disrupt night classes.

A Permanent Solution: Clean Water and Reliable Power

The Mpeta Water and Solar Project will provide:

  1. Sustainable Access to Clean Water: This ensures improved health by eliminating waterborne diseases and freeing up time for students to focus on their education.
  2. Constant Power Supply: Solar energy will replace unreliable electricity, offering uninterrupted lighting for evening classes and creating a better learning environment.

This initiative is a lifeline for the students, empowering them to achieve their full potential while fostering improved health, education, and wellbeing. By removing these barriers, we are helping to shape a brighter future for the boys and girls of Mpeta Secondary School.

The Miungo Water Project in Tanzania's Mtwara region has significantly transformed the lives of local villagers by providing access to clean and safe water. Funded with £5,300 from African Palms, the project was completed in 2014 and has been a resounding success.

Prior to the project's implementation, villagers faced the arduous task of collecting water from distant and often contaminated sources, leading to health issues and time constraints. The introduction of a reliable water supply has alleviated these challenges, improving overall health and freeing up time for education and economic activities.

The headmaster of the local school reported a significant increase in student attendance and performance, as children no longer need to spend hours fetching water. This improvement has had a positive ripple effect on the community, enhancing educational outcomes and future opportunities for the youth.

In 2015, additional funds were provided to extend the pipeline to Chipinpinbi, further expanding the reach of clean water access to neighboring communities.

The success of the Miungo Water Project exemplifies the profound impact that access to clean water can have on rural communities, fostering improved health, education, and overall quality of life.
